Low water pressure on a well

On city water, pressure comes from the utility. On a well, it comes from your own pump, pressure switch and tank, so when the shower turns into a dribble, the cause is somewhere in that system or in the pipes after it. Most low-pressure problems fall into a handful of causes, and some are easy to fix.

Start with the pressure gauge

Find the gauge near the pressure tank and watch it while someone runs a faucet. On a typical system it should drop to around 30 or 40 psi, the pump should kick on, and it should climb back to around 50 or 60 psi before shutting off.

If the gauge shows good numbers but the house still has weak flow, the restriction is after the tank: a clogged filter, a partly closed valve, scale in old pipes, or a failing water softener. If the gauge itself never climbs, the issue is upstream, at the pump, the switch or the well.

Common causes on Bartow County wells

Clogged sediment filters are the most common and the cheapest fix. Red clay and iron in some local wells load up cartridges faster than people expect.

A pressure switch set too low or with burned contacts can leave the system running at weak pressure. Adjusting or replacing the switch is a short job for a pro, and should not be done with the power on.

A worn pump may still run but no longer lift enough water, especially in a deeper well. You may notice the pump running for long stretches without reaching the shut-off pressure.

A hole in the drop pipe down the well lets water leak back while the pump runs. The pressure climbs slowly or not at all, and sometimes you hear the pump start for no reason overnight.

Low water in the well itself, more common late in dry summers, can make the pump draw air and sputter.

A failing pressure tank can also feel like low pressure: strong for a few seconds, then weak, then strong again as the pump cycles. That pattern points at the tank more than the pump.

Fixes and what they often cost

A filter swap costs very little. A new pressure switch is usually a modest repair. Constant-pressure systems with a variable-speed pump are an upgrade some homeowners choose for steady showers; they cost more but even out the swings. If the pump or the drop pipe is the problem, the work moves into pump replacement territory, often $1,500 or more depending on depth.

A good diagnosis saves money here, because the symptoms overlap. Measuring pressure, flow and pump amperage tells a pro which of these causes you actually have.

When to call

Call if the pressure drops suddenly, if the pump runs without stopping, or if you hear it starting when no water is being used. A local well pump pro serving Cartersville, Adairsville, Kingston and the rest of Bartow County will call you back and talk through what you are seeing.

Common questions

Can I just turn up the pressure switch?

Small adjustments are possible, but a pump that cannot reach a higher setting will run without stopping. Have a pro confirm the pump and tank can handle it.

Why is pressure fine downstairs but weak upstairs?

Height costs pressure, and older galvanized pipes narrow with scale. A pro can tell whether it is the system pressure or the plumbing.

Does a water softener lower pressure?

A clogged or undersized softener can. Putting it in bypass for a minute is a quick test.
